Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of oral health care focused on correcting malpositioned teeth. If your teeth are crooked or they don’t fit together correctly, they’re also harder to keep clean. As a result, you’re at a higher risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

Misaligned teeth can also take a toll on the muscles in your jaw. Regular wear-and-tear from chewing, speaking, and yawning can lead to headaches, facial pain, and muscle tension.

Who can benefit from orthodontics?

Anyone with crooked or overcrowded teeth can benefit from orthodontics.

Following a comprehensive oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your aesthetic goals, Dr. Vu can develop an orthodontic treatment plan that aligns with your needs. Depending on the severity of your oral issues, Dr. Vu might also recommend taking a series of X-rays or making plaster molds of your teeth.

What types of braces do you offer?

At Toothscaler Dental, Dr. Vu offers a comprehensive suite of orthodontic treatments, including:

Traditional braces

Traditional braces feature metal brackets and wires and require regular adjustments. However, thanks to manufacturing advances, modern metal braces are much thinner and less noticeable than their older counterparts. In addition, traditional braces now feature heat-activated archwires that help speed up the overall treatment process.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional braces. The only difference is that the archwires and brackets are made of ceramic instead of metal. Ceramic braces mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your teeth, so they’re less noticeable. However, they stain easily, so it’s important to brush after every meal.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces feature metal brackets and wires, but they’re placed behind your teeth instead of in front of them. Lingual braces are harder to clean and more expensive than traditional braces. However, they’re completely hidden, so only you and Dr. Vu will know they’re there.

6-Month Braces

6-month braces use a special, patented bracketing system that significantly speeds up the orthodontic treatment process. To achieve a straight smile with traditional braces, it takes anywhere between 18-24 months. 6-Month Braces, on the other hand, can straighten your smile in just six.

Invisalign®

Invisalign treatment involves a series of clear, plastic aligners that fit snugly over the surface of your teeth. Over time, the aligners gradually place pressure on your teeth, moving them into position while improving the appearance of your smile.
